Mini Book Review: Stolen Times by Danielle Rollins

Hello Everyone.

Today I am going to do a book review of Stolen Time by Danielle Rollins. I did like this book, it wasn’t the best, but it was enjoyable.

When I first read the synopsis of this book I was really excited to read it. I mean a book with time travel is one of my favourite things. The story its self was really good, it was fast paced and the explanations of the times, places and the travel was excellent. The only problem I had was with the characters themselves.

The character Dorothy, in the beginning you learn she has been taught how to be a can artist by her mother, and she trusts nobody. Thats it, her character seemed to have no character growth for me, she needed to have more substance. Ash was better, but at the same time I felt he had no character growth as well. I’m sorry to say that they are pretty forgettable characters. Thats the only problem I had with this book.

The time travel aspect was really cool, I liked the science explanations and how it all made sense. It is a fun read, I just wanted more from the characters, I will read the next book to see if it expands anymore.

Top 10 5 Star Reads!

Today I am coming to you with a list of my top 10 5 star reads on Goodreads.

Now these books are not any sort of order, they are just the books that have left the biggest impression on me. You guys may disagree with what I have chosen but they are my opinions. So lets get on with the list. In this I will list the book, give the synopsis from Goodreads, and then a brief note on why I chose the book.

1. The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Taylor has now become one of my favourite authors. This book was amazing, the character development was amazing. Honestly, after I finished reading the book, I almost when onto IMDB to look Evelyn up, she seemed that real. The story was gripping, heartbreaking and just amazing, if you haven’t read this yet, I highly recommend you do.

2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Stieg Larsson

An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

I read this book when I was on holidays in 2016. The story, the characters and the tension of the book was amazing. It was the perfect book to read by the pool.

3. Fangirl – Rainbow Rowell

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan..

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words… And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

This is one of my all time favourite books, I don’t even know how many times I have reread this book. I love it so much, because I identify with the main character Cath and her struggle with anxiety, and I class Levi as my perfect book boyfriend.

4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter’s third year at Hogwarts is full of new dangers. A convicted murderer, Sirius Black, has broken out of Azkaban prison, and it seems he’s after Harry. Now Hogwarts is being patrolled by the dementors, the Azkaban guards who are hunting Sirius. But Harry can’t imagine that Sirius or, for that matter, the evil Lord Voldemort could be more frightening than the dementors themselves, who have the terrible power to fill anyone they come across with aching loneliness and despair. Meanwhile, life continues as usual at Hogwarts. A top-of-the-line broom takes Harry’s success at Quidditch, the sport of the Wizarding world, to new heights. A cute fourth-year student catches his eye. And he becomes close with the new Defense of the Dark Arts teacher, who was a childhood friend of his father. Yet despite the relative safety of life at Hogwarts and the best efforts of the dementors, the threat of Sirius Black grows ever closer. But if Harry has learned anything from his education in wizardry, it is that things are often not what they seem. Tragic revelations, heartwarming surprises, and high-stakes magical adventures await the boy wizard in this funny and poignant third installment of the beloved series.

I don’t think I have to explain this one.

5. Anne of Green Gables – L.M. Montgomery

As soon as Anne Shirley arrives at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she is sure she wants to stay forever . . . but will the Cuthberts send her back to to the orphanage? Anne knows she’s not what they expected—a skinny girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match. If only she can convince them to let her stay, she’ll try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes and blurting out the first thing that comes to her mind. Anne is not like anyone else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special—a girl with an enormous imagination. This orphan girl dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables.

I loved the descriptions of Green Gables, and Anne is a fantastic character that I just fell in love with.

6. Outlander – Diana Gabaldon

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

This is the best time travel romance, I have ever read. Honestly Jamie Fraser is just the perfect man. EVER.

7. Saga – Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples

When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

From bestselling writer Brian K. Vaughan, Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.

My boyfriend introduced me to this graphic novel series, and I am so glad he did. The story is amazing, the characters are captivating, and it will slowly break your heart.

8. Game Of Thrones – George RR Martin

Also I don’t need to talk about this one.

9. Matilda – Roald Dahl

Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she’s knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she’s a super-nerd and the teacher’s pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda’s world. For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there’s the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Miss (“The”) Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer. Fortunately for Matilda, she has the inner resources to deal with such annoyances: astonishing intelligence, saintly patience, and an innate predilection for revenge.

She warms up with some practical jokes aimed at her hapless parents, but the true test comes when she rallies in defense of her teacher, the sweet Miss Honey, against the diabolical Trunchbull. There is never any doubt that Matilda will carry the day. Even so, this wonderful story is far from predictable. Roald Dahl, while keeping the plot moving imaginatively, also has an unerring ear for emotional truth. The reader cares about Matilda because in addition to all her other gifts, she has real feelings

This is my favourite book from my childhood. I always wanted to be able to do magic like Matilda when I was younger.

10. Shadow of The Fox – Julie Kagawa

This was literally like reading an Anime. It was fantastic. If you want a more detailed review of this book let me know, I have a lot of thoughts about it.

Mini Book Review: Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa

Hello everyone,

Today I am going to be doing a mini book review of The Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s a book full of Japanese legends and lore, Its a fun ride of a book.

One thousand years ago, the great Kami Dragon was summoned to grant a single terrible wish—and the land of Iwagoto was plunged into an age of darkness and chaos.

Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.

While reading this book all I had pictured in my head was anime. This book would make an amazing anime, like a really good anime.

I absolutely loved the main character Yumeko, she was really innocent and mischievous, and if she finds or sees a tough situation she would try to fix it. I loved all her interactions with the characters in this book. She just always seemed to disarm people, it was hilarious. I loved her mischievous side which was her Kitsune side and, she was just a strong main character.

Tatsumi, was interesting and was the opposite of Yumeko, he was very broody and quiet. he had such an interesting story he is a ninja for the shadow clan, he has been trained to not show emotion, as he carries a sword with a demon trapped within it and if he lets his in to much emotion the demon could take over his body, this sword also makes him the best Demon slayer in the world. He had a lot of character growth within the story.

The ending for this book was amazing! it had me on the edge of my seat. I need to get the second book like now.

Another thing with this book, there were a lot of Japanese words used, but if you didn’t know what they were there was a guide in the back of the book.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a quick, fast paced, YA fantasy book.

I’m Back!! Christmas Book Haul and 2019 Reading Goals.

Hello Bookworms,

I hope you are all doing well, I’m so sorry I have been absent for so long, it started with an epic book slump followed by the busiest months of my life, which included changing my job twice within 2 months. So I felt like my brain was melting for a while, you guys ever feel like that?

So now I’m back and I hope to start posting more, for this post I’m going to show my Christmas book haul and then my reading goals for this year.

So there are all the books I got for Christmas, I’m super excited to read all of these, and hopefully do reviews for you. I have already finished Shadow of the Fox and I hope to get a review done and Posted on Saturday.

Hogwarts House Book Recommendations: Hufflepuff

Hello Witches, Wizards and Muggles.

Today I am going to be doing a post on book recommendations based on your Hogwarts house. I am going to do my Hufflepuff book recommendations. My last post was Ravenclaw, you can find it here.

The books I’m going to recommend will be, what I think a Hufflepuff will like or if I think the character in the book would be a Hufflepuff.

You might belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal, these patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil.

Hufflepuff Traits: hard work, patience, justice, and loyalty.

Recommendations

I chose this book, because Anne is such a loyal friend and is kind. She loves making up stories with her friends, and she always works really hard to better herself.

I chose this book because, I really think this book would win the heart of any Hufflepuff. The loyalty between Eleanor and Park is heart warming.

Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

I chose this book because, the adorable Percy is so loyal to Monty, plus this book is so funny, and I think any Hufflepuff would appreciate it.

I chose this book because, Charlie is such an adorable character, I think he would be in Hufflepuff. Plus it shows him making friends and how they all help each other. Honestly I think Hufflepuffs would love this book.

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

I chose this book because, the adorable, Oreo loving Simon is the definition of a Hufflepuff, It even shows this in the movie! He is such an awesome character, I just want him as my best friend.

Leah Burke—girl-band drummer, master of deadpan, and Simon Spier’s best friend from the award-winning Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—takes center stage in this novel of first love and senior-year angst.

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high. It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended.

I chose this book because, Leah is Simons best friend and he turns up in this book. I think a Hufflepuff would enjoy this book, because it shows the loyalty between friends, but saying that, I think Leah herself would be in Slytherin. CONTROVERSIAL!

So there you have my Hufflepuff recommendations, next up will be Gryffindor.

Recommendations

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

The reason I chose The Hate U Give is because, I think that Starr would be a Ravenclaw, she has some traits of a Gryffindor, but altogether I think she would be a Ravenclaw. Also I think Ravenclaws would like this because of the message and the way the book makes you think.

Strange the Dreamer By Laini Taylor

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. The reason I chose this book is because, Lazlo is such a Ravenclaw its unreal, with his love of studying!! I love him so much, he is such an adorable man.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I chose Pride and Prejudice because, I think a Ravenclaw would really appreciate the subtle wit that Jane Austen had, and added into this book.

Matilda by Roald Dahl

I chose Matilda because, of her love of reading and learning, she would defiantly be in Ravenclaw if she went to Hogwarts, plus she can do magic so you know that is a plus.

I chose this because, Sherlock Homes is a total Ravenclaw, he is so intelligent, witty and he is an complete original, there isn’t anyone like Sherlock.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

I chose Fangirl because, Cath for one, is writing a Fanfiction about a book series which is basically Harry Potter. She would totally be in Ravenclaw.

Book Box Club Unboxing: September Box

Today when I got home from work a lovely surprise was waiting for me, it was my first ever Book Box Club box. Book Box Club is a YA Subscription box based in the UK.

Today I’m going to do an unboxing of the September box. The theme for this box was Into the Wild. If you are interested in getting this box after seeing this unboxing, then I shall leave a link at the bottom of the page.

Now onto the unboxing.

This is the box that it comes in, it’s such a lovely colour.

This is what it looked like when I opened it, I love the fact that they personalise the letter to open last. I think that shows they care.

As I said at the beginning the theme was Into the Wild, this was the spoiler card with all the information on where the stuff came from.

The first object I pulled out was this really cute lunch bag, this will be super handy to carry my food for work. I really loved this item, it actually made me squeal a little bit. This was from Sass & Belle.

We got some Dear Evan Hansen sticky notes, these are super handy at the mo, because I use sticky notes to organise things for this blog.

Then this lovely candle inspired by the Raven Boys, this was by Bookworm Candles & Crafts.

Then this really cute scarf.

Then this massage bar made by Naked Sister.

Then this, The Lost Boys notebook by Georgine Makes.

Then we get a little sneak peek of Dry.

Then one of the most exciting things we had was this:

We received an ARC of Damsel by Elana K. Arnold, this was so exciting for me, this is my first ARC.

The book comes wrapped up, it was like opening a present!

I really enjoyed this box, the stuff we got are really cute and I really can’t wait to read this book. It sounds like a young girl trying to find herself, and I love a good story like that.

Book Review: Legendary By Stephanie Garber

I really enjoyed this book, I think I prefer this book to the first one Caraval. I Love Stephanie’s writing it seems almost poetic, the way she describes places, smells and colours, leads to some beautiful prose. She also uses colours in an interesting way to make you feel like you are there.

I love the world in Caraval, and how magical it is. The story is good and I loved the fact that this book is told from the point of view of Donatella, where Caraval is told in Scarlett’s point of view. Donatella I found to be a much more interesting character, she is more fiery and she seems stronger than Scarlett.

Even thou I guessed the end of this book, it didn’t take away the enjoyment of reading it. I highly recommend this series. It’s such an interesting fantasy story and you get caught up in the lives of the characters, and also the games of Caraval, I love the aspect of hunting down clues, it gave the book a mystery feel.

I can’t wait for the last book to come out. Let the Games BEGIN!!
